Workers in Sri Lanka have organised a tribunal to denounce the appalling working conditions of tea pickers.
In their judgement, the judges made urgent recommendations to
improve the working and living conditions of the tea pickers
We the undersigned fully support these recommendations with our petition to the Government of Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of Plantation Industries and all relevant authorities.
-
Implement the minimum wage of Rs. 1700 (ca. CHF 4.90 / 5.10 €) without delay.
Prohibit unfair practices that deprive workers of their right to a fair wage.
-
Enact laws to protect the sanctity and tenure of collective agreements, preventing arbitrary termination by employers.
-
Set minimum standards for working conditions, including decent working hours, breaks, safe sanitation, clean drinking water, medical attention, and specific provisions for women workers (f.e. for breast feeding).
Recognize the right to adequate housing as a fundamental right, among others ensuring sufficient space, permanent structures and water.
-
Ensure that all plantation workers have access to government social safety mechanisms as well as financial security after retirement.
-
Develop policies for occupational health and safety standards, especially for risks unique to plantation work.
-
Implement laws to prevent the casualisation and informalisation of plantation work, ensuring workers receive statutory rights and protections.
